
Varberg is beautifully located at the shores of Kattegat, the Baltic Sea, which both the city and its inhabitants are deeply influenced by. Varberg is one of the Swedish cities in the south preparing for the rising sea levels and heavy rains due to climate change.
Aware of the declining biodiversity the municipality of Varberg lounged a local project to preserve stag beetles which need old oak trees to thrive, but it’ll take up to ten years to see the results. To mend and preserve is a slow process as the stag beetle lives as a caterpillar the first five years.
I had the privilege to collaborate with the Brazilian skateboard event company STU - Skate Total Urbe, who organizes inter-national skateboard events and competitions. I made some artworks for their first pro tour outside of Brazil which took place in the Swedish city of Varberg during August 1st to 3rd 2025. Skateboarding is a form of street art which has been central in my life and is a part of my driving force and of who I am. So I couldn't be happier for this opportunity to display my art and see it contributing to the atmosphere around the skateboard athletes.
The artworks I made depicting a snowy owl, stag beetles and a butterfly species of Baptria tibiale are all species found in the Swedish nature but are endangered. The main artwork depicts a snowy owl and two stag beetles on an oak tree.
The snowy owl is a migrating bird and mainly resides in the northern parts of Sweden, but it has sometimes been seen in the Varberg surroundings when there's been a shortage of food in their usual area.
Due to forestry, the diversity of habitat types in the Swedish forests has decreased. The butterfly species Baptria tibiale need shade and a special plant for its caterpillars and after the metamorphosis into a butterfly it needs open fields to fly in sunlight.
The ecosystems of the north and south are intertwined and affects each other. Emissions of carbon from human activity in the south have four times more impact on the climate in the north where the melting of glaciers, permafrost and ice increases the streams of meltwater from the north which changes all the ecosystems down the stream and raises the sea level.
